Navigating UpToDate

On this page, you will find overviews of the What's New, Patient Education, and Calculator functions on UpToDate.

What's New

What's New

The editors at UpToDate compile a number of new and important updates and share them on the "What's New" portal, where you can choose from a list of specialties.

For example, if you were to choose the specialty "Allergy and immunology," you would be able to view a compilation of the most recent updates in that field. (See next slide.)

As you can see below, by clicking on a topic, you will be able to read through some of the most pertinent new information on that subject. Near the top of the page, you can see when how current the material is, as well as the date of the last page update.

Patient Education Information

Patient Education

UpToDate users can access over 1,500 patient education entries. This information is available in two levels of content: "The Basics," usually 1-3 pages of overview material, and "Beyond the Basics," between 5-10 pages of more detailed information that includes medical terminology.

As you can see below, patient information is separated by category.

Patient Education

Each category is broken down by subject. Entries can be switched from "The Basics" to "Beyond the Basics" using the buttons at the top of the screen.

UpToDate also provides Spanish and Arabic translations for over 1,000 patient education entries.

Medical Calculators

Calcuators

By clicking the "Calculators" link on the homepage, users have the ability to use over 175 medical calculators. These can be viewed according to specialty or as in alphabetical order. There is also a search bar that can be used to find specific calculators within the list.

Using Calculators

Below is an example of how the calculators appear in UpToDate. Few differences are apparent between the online and mobile app versions.
